Summer is finally here! Long days and plenty of time to enjoy a nice splashy float down the river. If we’re not careful, the summer heat can translate to sunburn and other heat related illnesses. The key to an enjoyable experience is to be well prepared and prioritize your safety. Let’s explore how to best do that…
1. Choose an 8:00am trip with The Adventure Company. The river is quiet, the canyon is just waking up, the sun isn’t scorching hot, and you’ll have the whole rest of your day to do whatever you want. Use code SUMMER23 for 10% off our 8am Browns Canyon or Numbers trips.
2. If you are sweating at the put-in before your trip, dunk your helmet in the river and put them back on (have your guide double check it is on properly). This will immediately cool you off and get you reenergized for the rapids ahead.
3. DRINK WATER! Dehydration manifests in lots of different ways, and the heat only exacerbates the effects. Consider adding electrolyte powder to your water for maximum hydration before your big day in the sun.
4. Cover up with sunscreen, a hat, (polarized) sunglasses, and if possible, invest in thin UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) built in to your clothing so you don’t get fried out there. We are at a higher elevation here in Breckenridge and Buena Vista – and the sun feels extra intense up here.
The summer sun is no joke up here at 8,000ft. elevation. All of our raft trips are pretty splashy so that should be a great way to cool off. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your guide or one of our adventure coordinators in the office. We look forward to seeing you this summer!
