It’s summer vacation and your family has been counting down the days to your Colorado vacation to the town of Breckenridge! The kids can’t wait for all of the outdoor activities and cool adventures that they surely will remember forever. It’s the last hurrah before the they start school in late August, and this is going to be the perfect trip to round out the summer.
After the traveling is complete, and you get to the final destination of the scenic mountain oasis full of adorable little shops, great restaurants, and breweries, you spot some dark clouds creeping over the mountain tops. The rain storm is thundering its way into the valley… but not all hope is lost!
August is Breckenridge’s rainiest month, averaging 14 days of rain. Looking at the forecast, it displays a 20%-50% chance of rain daily for the rest of the month. Not the ideal weather for all of the fun outdoor activities you had planned, especially when Colorado is well known for its 300 days of sunshine per year. The daily rain in this high-alpine environment can sometimes put a damper on enjoying all of the fun outdoor activities in this adventurous paradise.
But there is still a chance to save your vacation from getting too soggy. In the next mountain valley south of Breckenridge, there is a very sunny area that is known for its warm and dry climate, nicknamed the Banana Belt. This is where Breckenridge chooses to go whitewater rafting since one of the best rivers in the world is located there, the Arkansas River.
Whitewater rafting on America’s favorite river is well worth the easy one-hour drive. It’s hard to believe that the short drive can create such a drastic change in weather, but the town of Buena Vista and the rafting trips on the Arkansas River will have little to no rain. High up in an alpine desert with less than 10 inches of rain per year, it has the perfect weather to be outside every day. Check out the live webcam of downtown Buena Vista here to see what we are talking about.
